Pick your Colors & Theme

Pick your Wedding Theme:

One of the ways you can save money and still have a stylish wedding is by picking a good theme for your wedding. Once you picked a theme, you will find it easier to select your wedding colors and decorations. Your theme will ultimately influence everything else in the wedding planning process.

The great thing about wedding themes is that there are literally hundreds to choose from. And you can personalize each of those themes in your own special way, so that your wedding will be fun, beautiful, memorable, and unique just for you! … and think of alllllll the pretty photos your photographer will be able to take :oD

  1. Use your interests and hobbies. You or your future spouse may be beach lovers or Elvis fans. Whatever your passion is, take that and develop it into a running theme that unites all the elements of your wedding together.
  2. Consider the season. An autumn wedding can be commemorated with fall colors, leaf motifs and even pumpkins and Halloween decorations. Likewise, a winter wedding theme can consist of snowflakes and lots of sparkly holiday decor. Fitting your wedding theme to the season makes for a lovely and unique occasion.
  3. Incorporate your location. An outdoor wedding befits a nature theme. A wedding or reception held in an art gallery calls for an artistic theme. Wine lovers may want to marry in a local vineyard and incorporate a wine theme into their wedding. The location of your wedding can help you pick an appropriate wedding theme.
  4. Incorporate the theme throughout the wedding. Now that you have chosen a wedding theme that reflects your personality or the nature of the ceremony, you should incorporate that theme into all aspects of your big day. Buy wedding favors that reflect your chosen theme. Consider using your theme in your wedding invitation design and program. You can also buy wedding centerpieces, decorations and flowers representing your wedding theme.

Once you decided on a theme, create a idea-board with photos you found in the internet. It will make it easier for you to not loose control, there are so many things out there, that one can easily get overwhelmed. You don’t need to have a lot of elements, but make the day memorable with your decor & find 1-2 unique things that your guests won’t forget.

Examples for Wedding Themes:

• Seasonal Themes: Summer Wedding | Winter Wedding | Fall Wedding | Spring Wedding | Halloween | Christmas | …

• Location / Hobby inspired: Beach | Garden | Castle | Golf Club | Tropical | Rustic | Rock & Roll | Nautical | Snow | Vineyard /Wine | …

• Cultural Wedding Theme: Asian | European | African | South American | …

• Decade-Specific Themes: Modern | Vintage | Victorian | 1920’s | …

Pick your Colors:

There’s no question: choosing the wedding theme & colors is one of the earliest, trickiest tasks a bride has to cross off the list.

Wedding color schemes can range from vibrant and deep shades, to light and airy, soft pastel tones. Usually, the deeper shades are reserved for fall and winter weddings, while the lighter shades are used in spring and summer weddings. However, this is not a hard and fast rule.

For example, a winter wedding looks crisp and dazzling using bright white and ice blue shades, while for a summer wedding you would use deep greens, woodland browns, faded yellows & pinks.

The key is to use colors that not only appeal to you, but work with the ambience of the theme that you are trying to create, and don’t forget your reception site will already have a certain color too.

Once you created your theme/idea-board, create a quick color/textures-board, with this in your hands it will be much easier to explain your ideas & wishes to your florist, cake designer, and anybody involved in the reception set-up.

I’d say pick 3 main colors and stick with them as much as you can. There are many websites & wedding blogs that you’ll find useful in creating your boards. Have a look what other couples did and see which elements of their weddings you’d like to incorporate into your big day.

I created a 2 theme & color boards, see below:

Vintage / Shabby Chic Weddings:

What about using a specific decade to come up with a fun period of time, based on clothing styles, music, and your ability to get fun props and decorations?

For example, with a 1920s wedding theme, you might consider bobbed hairdos and flapper dresses. It’s not that difficult to get your hands on 1920s decor and clothing these days. (Hint: thrift stores, party stores, and vintage stores.)

For fun decade-specific decorations, do a little research online to see what the styles and decor were like back then. Framed photos of old movie stars and old magazine ads are a good place to start.  You could also play music from that particular era. And could there be a more perfect “accessory” than A VINTAGE CAR! Yum!

Beach Weddings:

Select natural colors that compliment the sea such as taupe, silver and aqua. Bridesmaids can be dressed in aquamarine silk dresses with crystal and pearl chokers. Bouquets can be simple with curly willow, and vanilla roses.

Shells and sand can be used in your centerpieces. Some other colors that work well for a beach theme weddings are chocolate, beige, and any of the sunset colors (rust, dark red, maze)

Get inspired

So I thought since I’m on winter break and won’t be posting any new wedding photos for a while (well, ok until February – I have a beauuuutiful Destination Wedding coming up, yay), I could post some ideas for all of your girls in the planning stages and hope to get you inspired with some beautiful photos & articles I’ve found.

Now that you’ve most likely selected all of your big vendors, the winter makes it so much easier to stay home and concentrate on the never ending wedding-to-do-list, it’s a great time to think about the little details and get things going as the big day will be here sooner than you know!

There is so much out there, I can only imagine how overwhelming it must be and of course there is never enough time nor money to make everything look totally perfect, BUT having been a wedding photographer for all those years, let me tell you, you can make a HUGE difference with just some small personal touches.

Stay tuned. I’ll be posting wedding inspirations (& links to some cool vendors I found) every couple of days, I hope they will be helpful and you won’t get in trouble with your grooms ;o)) – And if you do, don’t tell them where you got the ideas from, especially if you’re one of MY couples, hehe ;o)

Published!! Theona & Tony :o)

Theona & Tony made it already on the cover of Bride & Groom before their wedding (they had a special edition about engagements), so it’s not a big surprise their beautiful wedding at the Tower Hill Botanic Garden got featured. I’m so happy for you guys!! :o)

You can read the full article HERE. We’re on page 18/19 :o)

Thanks again to Geneve, for being my 2nd shooter that day!! :o)

The Year in Review • 2009

It’s that time of the year again. The last 2009 wedding has been shot, I’m working my way through the staple of wedding album orders, and sorting through some really fun photos from the last year.

I have to say choosing photos from this year’s weddings was TOUGH! Real tough! I had to go through roughly 75,000 edited photos, I ended up with around 1,200 favorites (from just the weddings!) … haha …. I tried my best to narrow them down, but figured you don’t want to watch a slide show that lasts 20-30 minutes (but if you *do*, there is a link below you could check out) :o) So, here are a couple of my favorite photos from this year :o)

Happy New Year everybody!

Enjoy.

(Oh … and sorry for the repeating sound, nothing I can do about that :o( )

SHORTER VERSION: For all those that want to show the slide show to their fiance / husbands that would rather watch a football game :o)

LONGER VERSION: If you feel like torturing yourself, you can check out the longer version of the wedding slide show above, but get some cookies & some milk ready for yourself :o)

Happy Holidays everybody!! :o)

I just wanted to wish everybody a wonderful Holiday Season & all the best for the New Year! :o) Especially to all the newly married & engaged :o) Thanks for all the lovely comments on my blog & emails throughout the year, I always enjoy hearing from you. It’s been SUCH a fun year, and I’m already looking forward to all the adventures that we’ll have in 2010!

With this, I also wanted to announce that we’re expecting :o) Lill’ peanut is supposed to arrive in April of 2010, so we’re getting closer every week. I’m sure I’ll post more photos as the belly gets bigger (though it’s really hard to be in front of the camera when you’d rather be the one taking the photos … haha … but I gave up and delegated this job to my sweet husband) :o)

Happy Holidays!

Stephanie & Eric | 2 Year Anniversary Shoot

Even though I don’t post *all* of my shoots on my blog, I thought I will eventually have to post Stephanie & Erics pics that we took back in October (has it been already *that* long? WOW).

We’ve been planning to take an anniversary shoot for a couple of weeks, and did eventually get a Sunday with some nice (+ still warm weather). I’m still amazed how pretty the light was even thought we were shooting during harsh mid-day light … so here’s a tasty taste:

Oh and no … we did not “trash” the dress … It was just a “casual” post-wedding shoot :o)

MiJung & Young | Korean Church of Boston

This was it! My last wedding of this season! Boy, do I wish I could have changed the weather for you guys!! :o( Sooo much rain with no chances of taking any pics outside :o(( But I have to say you had a beautiful wedding anyway! :o)

MiJung & Young got ready at the Ritz Carlton in downtown Boston & celebrated their ceremony as well as their reception at the Korean Church in Brookline.

Congrats to both of you & I hope you had an awesome time in Miami & Paris … with some sunny weather :o)

MiJung, Young & I decided to do the posed pics before the ceremony, hoping to go to a park in Brookline, but unfortunately we had to skip that little trip. Instead we decided to take their pics at the very pretty Ritz Carlton where they got ready:

There wasn’t much dancing going on, but it sounded like they had some really funny toast (we didn’t understand a thing, haha, but their guests sure had an awesome time)

and thanks again to my faaabulous 2nd photographer Geneve!! :o)

Kiara & Bob | Hamilton Hall, Salem, MA

I have to say, I was a bit scared to shoot an other wedding this year, having seen how much the weather changed in just a couple of days, and since I was out of the country a couple of days before Kiara & Bob’s wedding I was especially nervous about the fall leaves, and the sinking temperatures. But I have to say, it couldn’t have been a more perfect day. Everything looked so pretty and was prepared with so much love to detail. We were able to take some pictures outside, and took some inside Hamilton Hall too – how could ever resist their beautiful interior?? It was a wonderful wedding & a wonderful couple :o)

Kiara & Bob celebrated their ceremony & reception at the beautiful Hamilton Hall in Salem.

I hope you guys had a great time on St. Lucia!! :o)

A special thanks to Lori Steigerwald for being my 2nd shooter on that day! :o)

simple & beautiful:

I love this shot:

And everybody that knows me, knows how much I love taking bridal portraits :o) One of my very favorites of all times:

What a stunning bride!!!

Since Kiara & Bob’s ceremony was a bit later in the afternoon we decided to take some photos beforehand, so we could take advantage of the beautiful fall colors :o)

Haha, I loved this cat, and I think she / he loved us too, must be the cuddliest cat in whole Salem! :o)

And for those of you that wonder, seeing a black cat on your wedding day is actually lucky!! :o) See here

Aren’t the colors Kiara & Bob chose just beautiful??? GORGEOUS!!

The next 4 photos were taken by my 2nd shooter, Lori. I love, love, love them – Thanks Lori!! :o)

And one more shot of the whole bridal party :o)

Yup, that was the room where Kiara & Bob held their ceremony (& reception). Isn’t is just beautiful??? I loooved the grand mirrors & all the beautiful chandeliers!

A special thanks also to Tricia, Hamilton Hall’s wedding coordinator / event planner. It was a real pleasure working with you! :o)

We’re off!

November / December are my official travel months. After I’ve been working every day, 14-16 hours (!!) a day for the past few months it’s time for some days off! :o)

I’ll be gone until Nov 5th, and then again a bit later in November & December.

I will most likely have only very limited internet access until then, I’m sorry for any inconvenience, but I’ll try to reply to all my messages once I’m back again.

Ivelisse & Greg | Sasso / Lucca Restaurant, Downtown Boston

Boy, what a fun, fall wedding! Not only did Ivelisse look drop dead gorgeous, they also had 2 super cute flower girls, alll sorts of pretty details, and wow could that crowd dance!!

Ivelisse & Greg celebrated their ceremony & reception at the Sasso Restaurant in Downtown Boston. I just drove through the area the other day, and I believe they changed the restaurant’s name to Lucca shortly after the wedding. Their photos were taken in the little park near the Prudential Tower.

A special thanks to my second photographer of the day, Shang who did an outstanding job. Thanks so much for joining me, I had a blast shooting with you :o)

I hope you are having a fabulous time in Puerto Rico! :o)

Have I mentioned I how much I love detail shots? :o)

Ivelisse & Greg decided to do their posed photos before the ceremony, and since Ivelisse is an architect we had to stop by the IM Pei building near the Christian Science Center for some photos:

I love the next 2 photos. What a dramatic backdrop!

A beautiful fall day in Boston:

Melissa & Jake • Engaged!

Ah, I love you guys. The shoot we had was so much fun, I don’t even know where to start! :o)

Melissa’s & Jake’s engagement photos were taken at the beautiful Larz Anderson Park, one of my favorite parks in the Boston area (yup, I love the bridge, you probably saw it before if you have been following my blog :o) ) AND not only did we luck out with the weather, but the Auto Museum had an outdoor exhibit and so we took some cool vintage pics with some old VW bugs, soooo cute, haha. I have a secret love for old cars … :o)

Oh, just love the colors of the mushrooms. What a fun pic, … if I may say so … :o)

We had a loooot of fun during the shoot, can you tell? :o)

Katrina & Billy • Engaged!

I took some engagement photos again not too long ago, it’s definitely getting colder these days and boy were we all covered with mosquito bites … Katrina & Billy came with their little Yorkie, what a cutie pie … haha! Who could ever resist her bit eyes??

Katrina’s & Billy’s photos were taken at a beach near Marshfield.

Thanks for a fun shoot & I’ll see you guys again next summer :o)

Kathryn & Nicholas | Lighthouse Inn

Kathryn & Nicholas, you guys had such a FUUUN wedding, I still have to chuckle when I think about some of your photos – especially considering what an early start we had with them / 8am AND they were all up, dressed … and … had a drink in their hands, haha. You guys are truly a wonderful couple. We had a great time at your wedding. I hope you’ll like your little preview, the rest will be in the mail tomorrow :o)

My very best wishes to both of you & I hope you guys had a fun honeymoon in beautiful Vermont!

Kathryn & Nicholas held their ceremony at the Federated Church of Orleans & their afternoon reception at the Lighthouse Inn.

A special thanks also to my lovely & awesome second photographer Geneve :o)

Oh, did I mention that Nicholas showed up with some fake mustaches?? ;o))

The Light House Inn has this funny looking Pirate Ship, which I thought was a perfect scene for this shot:

The pretty bride:

2 shots from Geneve:

I looooved your flowers & colors. Just beautiful!

It’s official there is no cuter flower girl than lill’ Sophia. Isn’t she just adorable??

And the ring barer was a cutie too :o)

I snagged this one from Geneve’s set. So pretty!  :

Aw, you have to enjoy those little moments … before you know it you’ll be dancing at their wedding ;o))

Videographer: Sean Mitchell

Hair & Make-up: Oceanside Spa, Brewster

Laurie & Ian • Engaged!

I haven’t been blogging any engagement photos recently, even though the fall is usually engagement season, there are just too many photos on my pile at the moment, and I don’t really get to share most of them :o)

But I photographer photographed 2 really fun engagement sessions last weekend, and though I should share :o) Both of them were taken at a beach a bit north of Boston, my favorite beach for e-sessions as you just can’t go wring with such a backdrop :o)

Meet Laurie & Ian. What a handsome couple you guys are! I hope you guys enjoy the teasers you’ll hopefully get to see your gallery tomorrow :o)

Can’t wait to shoot your wedding next year!! :o)

Kate & Ethan | Brookside Club

Kate & Ethan, you guys are such a wonderful couple. You did not let the rain ruin your day and it was such a joy to see the sparkles in  your eyes from the moment Kate walked down the isle with her dad, until we left the party. You guys are truly a perfect match and I *wish* we could have had sunshine, but I’m honestly not sure if the day could have been more perfect.

Thanks for letting us be part of your fun, funny & touching wedding day!

Kate & Ethan celebrated their ceremony at Saint John’s, in Pocasset and held their ceremony at the Brookside Club in Bourne.

Congrats to both of you! :o)

Yup, that’s how I felt too :o(

I hope you don’t mind me posting this photo, Kate … haha … This was Kate’s reaction when she had a first glimpse at the downpour outside … ;o)

Kate and Ethan were brave enough to try to fight the weather Gods and we drove to the Nobska Lighthouse for some group photos :o)

There was just no way that we could take any photos on the beautiful grounds of the Brookside Club, luckily they do have a nice big porch, our photo-saver of the day :o)

Cuteness! I love you guys!

Can you tell that Kate has a love for dancing? The whole bridal party performed a dance right after they were introduced … haha, you guys are just the best!! :o)

“You wouldn’t dare to smear the cake all over my face, would you?” ….. goooood husband :o)

“But that doesn’t mean I can smear your piece all over your face, right? Hehe … not sure if the cake will fit in your mouth honey, say aaaahhhhhh

… smuuuuush … :o)

Kate & Ethan may not have had the best weather on their wedding day, but they sure had an awesome party :o)

Their fabulous DJ: DJ Erik from event-experience.com

A special thanks again to my wonderful 2nd photographer: Geneve

Sacha & Larry | Bittersweet Farm

Another fabulous summer wedding! And this group sure knew how to party. :o)

I hope you guys enjoy your little sneak peek, you got SO many wonderful photos!

Sacha & Larry celebrated their ceremony & reception at the Bittersweet Farm in Westport.

I hope you guys are having a great time on your honeymoon :o)

I LOVED their colors:

My favorite of the day :oD

And a very special thanks again to Geneve :o)

Katie & Bryan | Keene Country Club

What should I say, I kept checking the weather report for Katie’s & Bryan’s wedding (ok, I admit it, I check the weather report every day during the wedding season, I’m an addict and constantly worried), and it really broke my heart, but the forecast looked … well … bad. There was a hurricane warning on the coast, and every day I checked, all I saw were rain drops :o( Katie called me 2 days before to check and see what sort of back-up plan we could come up with, and it turned out we didn’t have to worry. I don’t think I felt one raindrop on me that day, and I can’t even tell you how happy I was for you guys!! :o) Getting married in such a pretty location, but having the weather turn against you is a weddingday-no-go, haha!! ;o)

Katie, first of all, I LOVED your shoes, and all your details and color scheme for your wedding. Everything looked SO pretty. The flowers turned out amazing, the venue was beautiful, and you guys are just one of the best couples!!

Congrats to both of you. I wish you both the very best, I really enjoyed working with you on your wedding day. And thanks also to your parents for the warm welcome into their home.

Katie and Bryan held their ceremony and their reception at the Keene County Club in New Hampshire.

I hope you guys are enjoying Hawaiiiii :o)

It was a coooold summer day, haha:

And a very special thanks again to my 2nd photographer who does outstanding work: Geneve
